Alaa Abdel-Fattah

Blogger and Activist

Alaa Abdel-Fattah is an Egyptian blogger and political activist. He grew up in a family of activists – his father is Ahmed Seif El-Islam Hamad, a human rights attorney and one of the founders of the Hisham Mubarak Law Center. He is the brother of renowned activist, Mona Seif and the nephew of the author, Adhaf Soueif. He was arrested and imprisoned for fourty-five days in May 2006 after taking part in a peaceful demonstration calling for an independent judiciary. His arrest and imprisonment sparked solidarity protests and a campaign demanding his release. He was arrested again in October 2011 for taking part in demonstrations against the violence in Maspero. Amnesty International and the United Nations Commission on Human Rights condemned his imprisonment.
